16 imagesBirds of prey (Raptors) hunt and feed on other animals and have keen vision, powerful talons and strong beaks. While many species of birds may be considered partly or exclusively predatory, “bird of prey” typically brings to mind varieties of eagles, hawks, owls and osprey. These are incredible birds to watch in flight and on the attack.

21 imagesFoxes are small-to-medium-sized omnivorous mammals that are slightly smaller than a medium-size domestic dog. They can be found on almost every continent with variations in size, color and shape. The most common and widespread species of fox is the Red Fox. The Arctic Fox is one of my personal favorites and can be found in severe northern climates. The Arctic is one of the smaller foxes and can be seen moving at a fast, erratic pace across the tundra hunting for food. Their thick coat is brown in the summer and turns white in the winter. They are difficult to photograph when on the move but fun to watch.

80 imagesThe earth offers infinite possibilities for the landscape photographer. While we all love the exotic locations, a beautiful landscape can be identified and photographed during a quiet drive down a local county lane. The styles, composition, environment, weather and objective of the photographer can result in significantly different representations of the same scene. Many photographers shoot scenes with expectations for how the audience will connect with the image; impacting emotions, creating a sense of place, or issuing a call to action. Ansel Adams played a significant role in the creation of Yosemite National Park through his iconic images that help raise awareness and create a sense of place for his audience. His message was one of preserving the natural beauty through conservation. Modern artists such as Frans Lanting and Art Wolfe continue that tradition using their images to share the beauty of the natural world, celebrate different cultures, and create awareness of conservation issues.

63 imagesThere are a few species of animals that immediately jump to mind when you mention wildlife photography. The animals that don’t get their own gallery are just as important to the ecosystem. In many cases where the removal or decline of an animal is viewed as insignificant, and yet, it has a major impact on the entire ecosystem. The animals in this gallery are from the lesser known or “less respected” species.

14 imagesWaterfalls come in all shapes and sizes, from spring fed trickles of water to massive flows like Angel Falls at over 3,200 feet. Photographers can choose to present a waterfall with a soft “cotton candy” look or a highly defined turbulent swirl of fast moving water. The presentation can connect a viewer to a quiet ethereal setting or the massive power of nature.
